narrative cloggers, a two person exhibition with artist nicole ward in loftet, kunstnernes hus, oslo norway “i wanted my first novel to be a veritable infarct [an area of dead tissue] of narrative cloggers - the trick being to feel your way through each clog by blowing it up until its destructiveness finally reveals not blank mass but unlooked-for seepage”. nicholson baker |

poor clare, poor phone 1982/2024 0’25” video looped on phone (inside gallery against glass) with bluetooth speaker (outside gallery in stairwell) original audio intermittently unmuted (gif. low res clip below) |
this phone film loops the establishing shots from a 1982 local television segment on the poor clares, a now vacant convent in west belfast. (my mother was a member of this covent during its time as a closed order, many years before this footage) |
the original film footage captures the convent’s bell chiming from inside the convent (unseen), both a call to prayer and their wakeup call. The work was part of an audio intervention in the stairwell of kunstnernes hus (ateliers) that connected to this phone video via bluetooth. |
